As I shared with the chef, "It was an honor to partake of this meal." And, there was the additional delight of being able to share the evening with, not only our chef's mom (Yahoo mom) but also with the owner/growers of Roots Organic Farm in Meadow Vista, the source of many of the meal's special and staring ingredients Do yourself, and friends and loved ones, all a favor, and make it a priority to enjoy this gem of a vegetarian and vegan eatery in downtown Auburn. This is a chef not-to-be-missed, working his magic in a restaurant run on love and enthusiasm for whole, locally grown food. The food was photographically beautiful and absolutely scrumptious. Fifth) Puckeringly wonderful heirloom apricot tarte, with house-made coconut cream ice cream. Fourth) Organic locally grown heirloom corn, hand ground into world's best and most perfect polenta, topped with two varieties of braised mushrooms. Third) Curried squash soup with crispy roasted and gently spice cauliflower florets. Second) Thinly pared golden beets atop organic arugula drizzled with cherry balsamic reduction and that elegant fruity local olive oil. First) Heirloom yellow tomatoes, hollowed and then completely filled with small cubes of fresh mozzarella, heirloom basil and local olive oil, topped with "micro basil" greens. Me.) The chef guided us through each presentation, all being unified by his choosing to celebrate the color and flavor of yellow fruits and vegetables. ( OK, the curried winter squash soup was a bit too spicy for some. "Sold Out" reservations filled the intimate space and every person present was enchanted with every dish served. "Amazing" was the echo throughout the "Gold of the Foothills" Pairing Dinner at Nectar Café last night.
